accept online donations by credit card or eCheck!

 

Tom Cary and Billy Freesmeier with Main Street Bank will be joining us to talk about AirCharity:

 

AirCharity is designed to not only help you accept online donations by credit card or eCheck in a very low cost manner, but then those who donate have the ability to become an advocate for your cause by sharing their experience through social media (facebook, twitter and email) to virally spread your message, and most importantly a donate button to encourage other’s to contribute. It allows you to reach an audience you would never otherwise have access to and costs you nothing to do so. By donors posting your “widget” (logo, message and “donate” button) socially, everyone following them learns about your cause and has the opportunity to donate right then and there, and then they share with their friends, and so on and so on.

Volunteer Arlington Day

Volunteer Arlington Day needs VOLUNTEERS!  Tuesday, April 23 from 1:00 – 4:00.

We are very excited for next week’s Volunteer Arlington Day, and want to thank all of you who are participating—we look forward to seeing you and hearing some wonderful volunteer stories!  Unfortunately, we have just had a couple last minute volunteer group cancellations.  We, as the Community Action Committee, are tasked with making this event a success—in that light, Jan and I would like to ask each of you who are not already involved to go back to your organizations/companies and see if you can recruit some volunteers for Tuesday afternoon.  We are looking for both individuals and groups who are willing to roll up their shirt sleeves and help the Arlington community (even if you work for a different organization!). 

Kickoff begins at noon at the Arlington Employment Center and the volunteer projects will be held at various project sites from 1-4pm.

All those who are available to participate, please email Kate Roche at the Chamber ASAP (kroche@arlingtonchamber.org).

March 22 Meeting Notes

Membership:
Database updates – Karen will work with Elizabeth and other members to keep and maintain an updated membership database.
 
Elizabeth made several personal reaches to groups about their membership who have responded very favorably.  The Arlington Sister City has joined and the Salvation Army is considering it.  The calls really make a difference. 
 
Other folks are assisting:
Ed is talking to the Elks
Elizabeth is reaching out to the Masons and Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment
Khalid will reach out to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars
Joe will contact the Rotary Club of Rosslyn
 
We talked about reaching out to former and current members first and then look into the broader community to see who else we should invite to join.
 
Meeting Location:
Westover Library with a speaker every other month.
Karen mentioned a possible speaker for our April meeting – someone from Main Street Bank to talk about a widget that we could place on our e-mail, website and/or blog that is similar to a “Donate Now” button.  This is something that each of our clubs could benefit from, if they’re available to give a presentation. [SPEAKER CONFIRMED!]
 
Communications:
Blog – Kim will update blog as information is provided.
Brochure – Karen will update the flyer.
 
Arlington sign – Elizabeth has been working for over a year on this, but we are getting closer! Several clubs have their signs on order and once they come in, we will work with the volunteer to put the signs up.  We have decided to offer him a stipend for up to $200.00 for his time and assistance.
 
County Fair Advertisement – although we voted not to have a booth at the fair, we decided that we should look into advertising in the paper for the fair.  Shawn and Karen will look into that.
Clarendon Day – Kim reported that Clarendon Day is on September 28th this year.  She will look into the details and keep the ISCC informed, if we decide to participate.
 
Financial Report:
We are in the black with two additional memberships coming in this past month.  Karen will give us a complete list of paid memberships at the next meeting.

January 2013 Meeting Notes

President Elizabeth called the meeting to order just after noon, beginning by thanking Past President Kim Durand for her years of service.  Kim was awarded a coveted bag of Baby Bell Oranges from the Lions.

Baseline

ISCC objectives are:

  • To promote friendship, good will and understanding among the member clubs/organizations.
  • To coordinate projects among the various service clubs/organizations.
  • To discuss community problems and how member clubs/organizations can address them in an effort to make the community a better place in which to live.
  • To address the needs of member clubs/organizations in their efforts to recruit and sustain members.

Keeping that in mind, what are some ways we can enhance what we’re already doing?  Are there new ideas for how we can support these goals?

Elizabeth will work on a packet of information for each of the members that will include by-laws, current membership, club meeting dates, time and locations.

Financial Info

Karen reported that 12 clubs have not paid, but that a dues letter will go out to bring everyone up to date.  Once this information has been updated, then a regular billing cycle will be set.

  • Leadership Arlington Youth Philanthropy Project

Improve Communications

Internal

  • Informational packet for each of us and for new members to have a better understanding of ISCC
  • Visit other clubs so that we can talk about ISCC during their regular meetings

  • Update brochure
  • Facebook/Blog – Kim will keep up-to-date

Welcome ot Arlington Sign

Pat shared that she thought the sign was wonderful and thanked Elizabeth for her work in spearheading that effort.

Elizabeth will be working on a few items to tweek the sign to make it even better: Enlarge the sign a bit, place it a bit higher on the posts, take down members who are no longer current, and add member signs that need to be updated.

Events

  • County Fair
    • It was determined that ISCC will not participate in the County Fair this year with a table.  However, we will look into purchasing an advertisement in the program that will go to the distribution of the Sun Gazette.
  • Clarendon Day
    • Members felt this would be a good use of time and money.  Kim will contact Matt Hussman to inquire about dates and costs associated.  Games with prizes and information about clubs will be available at this “booth”.
  • Taste of Arlington
    • Edd said that he would follow-up with the Ballston Partnership to get more information about dates and fees for this event that is usually in May.  This will be an event similar to Clarendon Day.
  • Other Events?
    • As we hear about events in Arlington, we should keep ISCC in mind and how we might participate.
    • Are there free things we could look into?  Tables at restaurants?

Speakers

This year, the ISCC will have speakers featured every other meeting.  If anyone has some ideas, please share them with Elizabeth.

Luncheon Committee

All ready planning for the Annual Man/Woman Service Club Member of the Year!  The committee includes Karen, Kim, Elizabeth and Emily.  If there is anyone else who would care to join in the planning for the lunch, please let Karen Albert know.

Meeting Dates/Times

The ISCC Meetings will be held on the fourth Friday on each month at 12:00.  The location will be determined and posted here and/or sent through e-mail reminders.

Man/Woman of the Year for 2012!

Man of the Year

This gentleman joined the Kiwanis Club of South Arlington in 2000.  He has been the president of the club from 2006 – 2009 and again 2011-12.  While the club has benefited and thrived under his leadership, it’s his service to the community and his abilities to reach out to the less fortunate and communicate their needs to others that have made our community a better place to live and why the Kiwanis Club of South Arlington nominated Andres Tobar as Man of the Year.

Andres currently serves as the Executive Director of the Shirlington Employment and Education Center, which helps day laborers and local residents who are looking for work and they have placed more than 2,000 jobs such as furniture moving, landscape and minor home repairs.

Andres started the “give a meal” program, collaborating with the faith community who helped prepare the meals.  He initiated a training program for immigrant women, which provides instruction in Green Housecleaning, which will help them become more marketable while using environmentally safe cleaning methods. 

Andres has also participated on the Advisory Board of Arlington Mill School, Arlington County Crime Solvers, AMEN (Arlingtonians Meeting Emergency Needs) and the Virginia Coalition of Latino Organizations.

For his service and dedication to the Kiwanis Club of  South Arlington and the Arlington Community, we congratulate Andres Tobar as Man of the Year.

Woman of the Year –

This wonderful woman has been a member of both the Better Sports Club of Arlington and the Arlington South Lions for many years.  She manages the Christmas Tree Lot with both hats on and through this work, raises money for both organizations to complete projects and their work in the community throughout the year.

For this reason, and many more, The Better Sports Club of Arlington has nominated Emily Carnes as Woman of the Year.

Emily has served in leadership roles in both clubs, as Secretary and Executive Board Member for Better Sports and the President and Secretary for the Arlington South Lions.

Emily is currently the 2012 District Governor for Lions District 24-A.

Both groups have honored her for her devotion and dedication with their awards – as an outstanding club members, a distinguished humanitarian award and the International President’s Leadership Medal, on of the Lions top honors.

One of her main accomplishments over the past 5 years has been her work with the Lions Assisted Medical Project which provides badly needed medical care for individuals and families in one of the poorest areas of Virginia and West Virginia.  For many of these folks, this is the only medical care they receive during the year.

Emily’s energy, friendliness and willingness to sacrifice her personal time are an inspiration to all who are fortunate to come into contact with her.

Please join me in congratulating Emily Carnes as Woman of the Year.

May 23 ISCC Notes

Thank you to everyone who attended our social meeting last night at William Jeffrey’s Tavern on Columbia Pike.  The catfish was yummy!

We talked about the topic of membership that each of our clubs is facing.  We didn’t come up with any magic pill, but we did have a couple of questions to explore:

  • What motivates people to join a service club?
  • How do we make sure that Arlingtonians know about our clubs?
  • Can we reach parents through the youth activities that we provide?

Idea for a PR Event: Could ISCC host a Happy Hour to benefit (name a non-profit) where we also get to talk to the community about what we do.  Go to Witlows or some other location that has a separate bar, each of the clubs pitch-in to buy some appetizers and maybe 1 drink ticket per non-service club member.  $10.00 cover (or whatever) goes to the non-profit.

Idea for Fellowship Fundraiser: It was also suggested that perhaps ISCC could holds its own fellowship poker night.  There would be a $100.00 buy in.  The winner would split the money with ISCC and the rest would go to their club treasury.  A nice night to get to know one-another, and raise money as well.

Welcome To Arlington Sign:
Special thanks to Elizabeth Schindler, John Karinshak, Shawn Kelley and Mike Stevens for taking inventory of the exsisting sign and making suggestions for all of our clubs.  Here is their report:

  1. Structurally sound, no immediate safety red flags.  Several bolts need to be covered.
  2. 3 signs missing:  Welcome to  Arlington, Salvation Army and Links
  3. Soroptimist sign needs to be 30″ in diameter — same size as other signs
  4. Lions phone number and Rotary meeting info needs to be checked for current accuracy
  5. Sign is obstructed by overgrown tree
  6. Need to verify that each organization represented is in good standing with ISCC
  7. Are there any clubs not represented that want to be?  ie:  Better Sports Club
  8. Zonta is in most need of replacement.  Other signs are sound but faded.

If you are purchasing a sign, please do so immediately.  We want to get this sign spruced up ASAP.  If you have any questions, please contact Kim Durand, kdrotary@hotmail.org.

Hello ISCC Members – Here are some things you need to know from our meeting on April 27th.

1) Civitan’s Need YOUR Help –

Garage Sales are beginning again, with the next one on May 5th.  As always, groups are invited to participate and receive $10.00 per hour for their work.

2) Our meetings dates/times will be changing!  As a result of our survey of members, we will be trying out a new schedule that we hope will accommodate you!  We will have a COMBINATION of Evening and Daytime meetings –

3) Membership Letters will be sent SOON!  Membership is $35.00 per club.  There is an optional additional fee of $100.00 for the Leadership Arlington Youth Philanthropy Initiative that I hope you will all consider.  Your $100 will be combined with others to support a $1,000.00 grant from the ISCC (and your club) to be donated to an Arlington Non-Profit.  This program educates Arlington’s youth the importance of giving back to the community.

  • Lions have a Free Clinic Tour on Tuesday, May 1st and invited anyone who is interested to attend.  If you haven’t seen their new facility, this is a perfect opportunity.  6:00pm.

  • Civitan’s will have their awards dinner to honor the High School Senior Citizen Award on May 8th at Harvest Moon in Falls Church.
  • Zonta held their Wine Seminar and silent auction and had a great turn-out.  They have also awarded their Annual Nursing Scholarship.
  • Rotary helped AFAC pack canned goods from their Canstruction project at Ballston Common Mall.  They are also currently accepting High School Scholarship Applications.

Welcome to Arlington!

Welcome to Arlington SignMany have seen the sign and wondered, how can we spruce that up?  ISCC now has a group of folks working on it!  If your logo/emblem is out of date, purchase a new one of similar size and let us know.  We’ll be having a work day to address the sign and get it looking better.  FYI – for those of you wondering, the ISCC is responsible for that sign.  We have considered taking it down, rather than trying to update it, but if we do that, we may not be able to ever put it up again!  What do you think?  Please feel free to comment here or e-mail me a kdrotary@hotmail..com.
